The performance of heat exchangers can be assessed with CFD. This is particularly important for situations where the exchanger configurations are different enough so that empirically based correlations are inapplicable.
However the calculation of heat transfer coefficients is not a trivial problem in CFD. Also not all situations can be modeled effectively. Flow Simulations, Inc. has perormed over 100 models of heat exchangers and we are very experienced in calculating heat transfer.
Calculation of heat transfer coefficients is not a trivial problem in CFD. Also not all situations can be modeled effectively. Flow Simulations has experience in determining heat transfer coefficients for many types of exchangers including units of new or unusual configuration for which there are no empirical correlations.
Flow distributions around heat exchangers can be modeled including natural convection effects which are significant in still fluid conditions.
