The performance of heat exchangers can be assessed with CFD. This is particularly important for situations where the exchanger configurations are different enough so that empirically based correlations are inapplicable. However, the calculation of heat transfer coefficients is not a trivial problem in CFD. Also not all situations can be modeled effectively.

Flow distributions around heat exchangers can be modeled including natural convection effects which are significant in still fluid conditions.
